Gas generators and battery power stations solve the same problem in very different ways. A generator makes power for as long as you feed it fuel. A power station stores a fixed amount and must be recharged. Neither is better across the board.

Choose a power station if…

  • You need power indoors, quietly, at night (CPAP, router, fridge, medical devices).
  • Your outages are usually short (hours to a day or two).
  • You camp somewhere generators are banned or unwelcome.
  • You'd rather not store gasoline.

Choose a generator if…

  • You regularly face multi-day outages and need heavy loads such as well pumps or central AC.
  • Budget matters most per watt delivered.

The best of both

Many people pair a power station with a small generator or solar panels. The station runs silently overnight; the generator or sun recharges it during the day. Several larger stations, such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro and DELTA 3 Plus, accept generator input directly.

EcoFlow · Mid-size

DELTA 3 Plus

  • 1,024Wh
  • 1,800W out
  • 27.6lb

The DELTA 2’s successor: same 1 kWh size, but 4,000 cycles, double the solar input (1,000 W), 140 W USB-C and expansion to 5 kWh.

Maker’s list price: $700–$1,499

Jackery · Large

Explorer 2000 Plus

  • 2,042Wh
  • 3,000W out
  • 62lb

2 kWh with 3,000 W output and expansion to 12 kWh with add-on batteries. Aimed at whole-home backup, with wheels to make its 62 lb manageable.
